that is the other day president obama was campaigning down in virginia. he made that very remark. he was saying i know i have supporters out there in the audience but i wanted to talk to some of the folks who are watching on tv who may not be my supporters. mitt romney in some of his campaign remarks have said the same thing. so the mention are sounding a little more independent or centrist than they did in the past. >> gregg: what is curious and this is borne out by some of the polls, roughly 60% of the likely voters think the president's economic policies -- there it is -- have hurt the economy or made no difference at all. in other words, you have to add the bottom 38 plus 21. take a look at the other numbers. when asked if policies need changing, a stunning 73% said yes. how is it that an incumbent leads when voters are demanding change? >> that is the very big question of this election. mitt romney has tried to run as a change agent, but what the obama campaign has done very well is attack him in critical swing states that both candidates wanted to win. he has done a good job of disqualifyin

, this guy, obama basically is a good guy. he has failed. he's got no new ideas. we're going down the same road, and we can't do that. here is where we are going, my friend. >> that's the key thing. >> friendly and tough -- [ all talking at once ] >> you are directing the president's -- >> use the humor to dismiss- type humor in his approach to the other guy. >> it's like saying never go to a doctor whose office plants have died, okay? whatever his programs are, the president's programs have failed. the economy isn't growing except they have reduced the rate of growth in the economy to 1.2% so don't tell me his programs are working. >> hold on. [ all talking at once ] >> people know that. >> swing voters? how does he get the swing voters? >> i think there are more swing votes than eleanor thinks. if you look at romney's 47% remark, it hurt and persuaded people the wrong way. the key thing is not just saying the president has failed it's convincing people that romney's program is better. people don't believe that yet. >> he has not put out any credible program. he talks in platitudes, and b

obama heading to las vegas tomorrow for a campaign rally. the president then expected to hunker down in henderson, nevada, to prepare for that first presidential debate. nbc news white house correspondent, mike viqueira, joining me live. now, mike, the president again, no public appearances today. earlier this week, he was at the united nations. he's been hitting the campaign trail hard. he's been dealing with the fallout from the libya attacks. is he finding enough time to even practice for the debates? >> well, you know, craig, to the extent that the command of the issues will make a difference in these debates, you can say he's getting a lot of on the job training, certainly. but to argue your premise a little bit, the president, as far as we know, is, in fact, practicing for those debates. just yesterday, he spent two hours south of the capital, about a mile from here, the democratic national committee headquarters, where we are told, on deep background, that he was, in fact, practicing on those debates. of course, the person who is the mock mitt romney, if you will, john kerry,

states. the plane is the united states. the woman is the american people. and obama is the pilot. >> exactly. >> greg: hope and change. >> eric: and the plane is going down. the plane is the economy. >> greg: where is the parachute? >> eric: my wife would never get in the plane with me. if i did that she wouldn't marry me. >> kimberly: i didn't know they made plane that small. a little big wheel with wings. >> bob: i'm sensitive to a prenup, because my former wife wouldn't give me one. prenup, you know what they are? sign a contract saying this is what we will do or not do if we get divorced. andrea, go ahead. >> andrea: the story is basically that more and more people are getting crazier with the prenups. you can write anything in there. so there are reports, the "new york post" had a story which said that men are now writing in their wives must maintain a certain weight or might not wear a certain color or they're required to do the horizontal mambo a certain number of times in the week. >> bob: i don't see what is wrong with this. >> greg: i thought we were doing a story on ex

conservatives are not going to vote for obama. they will vote for romney and the other conservatives up and down the ballot. but the main reason we're doing this, it's the right thing to do. iowans were right when they ousted the other three justices. we hope they're savvy enough this time to take a look at wiggins, get through smoke and mirrors of the bar association trying to hold on to power and defend the constitution. >> so bob vander plaats, you just essentially said that this is in fact a wedge issue. you at least conceded that. >> well, what it, there is no doubt it's going to be a ripple effect. i think could benefit conservatives, which i think is a good thing. but the bigger thing is that you're going to hold an activist judge in check. this guy's got a d-minus rating by his own peers, d-minus. >> you know that there are significant number of people in this country that truly believe that our justices, our judges who are appointed in most places, but even those who are elected should be elected to interpret the law as they see fit. and that only bad things can happen when you start to

that governor romney wants government spending at a lower level of g.d.p. than does president obama?" >> gross domestic product. >> gross domestic product. governor romney wants to bring government spending per g.d.p. to g.d.p. down to 20%. and he has a theory that says that if you do that and you do the other things that he's going to do with the tax code that he is going to get economic growth. and so the second thing i'm listening for is, "what is their solution to the situation we're in right now with the economy? how are they going to solve the deficit problem and also increase job creation?" and i'd like to hear that explained clearly, because they have two very different philosophies. third, i think that if the debates do their job, we're going to be able to answer the question, "what are the sacrifices either one is going to ask us to make?" >> such as reforming social security, medicare, higher taxes, lower taxes? >> yes. and on the table are all sorts of things that many people value a great deal and we may not be able to afford anymore. so should we have deductibility for second hom

medicine for those doctors that didn't grow up on ipads it's easier to scribble a note down and see your information. it's starting to shift par sh*eu partially through obama incentive they are paying to shift to electronic. enabling to do it online for free on the web and that shift starting to happen. and that creates this new opportunity to have the power of not just medical information and data, to make it useful to the clinician and patient to give new visibility. electronic medical record should be electronic medical system and that's why in of these incentives have been in place to move the shift. once the incentive is there it's easier if doctors to do it the old fashioned way. >> gavin: once you have the actual data, health history it's more than just a way of having a virtual file cabinet. it can be used in what ways to make your life better? >> to date it's still much an electronic file. but where it's moving towards is sort of a smart system or dashboard, a smart in some cases enhanced by artificial intelligence

, a trend that could give president obama an edge over governor mitt romney on election day if republican voters don't think they can close the gap. chief congressional correspondent mike emanuel reports now from washington. >> go up and down, we have plenty of time. >> history shows late september leads can evaporate by election day. in 1968, hub bert humphrey was down 15 points to richard nixon. while nixon won it was by less than 1%. in 1976, jimmy carter had a lead over gerald ford. after three debates, ford cut the lead to five points and led in the final gallup poll though narrowly lost. in 1980, carter maintained a consistent advantage over ronald reagan, but the final presidential debate changed everything leading to a reagan landslide. with polls now showing president obama building a lead over mitt romney in key battleground states, a democratic pollster and consultant who worked for jimmy carter says finding the right sample to survey can be tricky. >> we know from the exit polls and others, the republicans tend to respond to these polls less than oftentimes, particularly from

the superpacs being the snakes. we could do a lot of samuel l. jackson. >> i will strike down with great vengeance and furious anger those who will attempt to destroy my brothers. >> a lot of you know my name is the lord when i lay my vengeance upon thee. that should be obama's slogan for the first debates. >> they don't know the second hour of nhp is a drinking game. >> congresswoman, i'm almost sad i put you at this table. >> really, i'm not ready to pop open the champagne cork for president obama, because, you know, the republicans have what i call scissergy where the sun, the moon, and the stars have all lined up in their benefit to change the game here. number one, they have citizens united where they can spend unlimited, unaccountable amounts of money. if you give me $20 donation, you got to give your name, age, social security number and where you work. these folks, they give millions without disclosing who they are. they have voter suppression tactics. clearly, in all of the battleground tactics they had a coordinated strategy to do that and when they picked paul ryan, i thought,

these national political journalists that were about to meet the obama campaign for an off-the-record lunch. are you here for the launch, i looked at everybody, and i said, yes. i sat down and i think we had some bloody mary's and it was great. i never confessed, and now i just did. not that i got a great story, but i will be here. >> i think it was easier in local news because covering a kw who you were. if you are standing around somewhere and somebody would come out to you, you knew who they were, and if you just have to ask innocuous questions that got you information that would put you in the right place, i did not think that was such a bad waste of anonymity. bad waste of anonymity.

years of barack obama. we're not going to have four more years of barack obama. >> the yemeni president was in washington d.c. today to speak at the wilson's manner. mr. hadi took over the presidency in february after an uprising forced a previous president to step down after 33 years in power. security remains a major turning ament with president hadi offering to hold talks with al qaeda and other militant groups to take down their weapons. jane harman gives introductory remarks. >> do we have some more room for the president's party? let's see -- okay. good afternoon to welcome to the wilson center. i am jane harman, president and eeo. the wilson center, a living memorial to her 28th president is a vibrant arena for discussion. our charter for business or not busy, but not from creating a safe political space to engage a diversity of views and to explore today's toughest policy issues. all viewpoints are sought out and heard, free from spam. on behalf of the wilson center and the atlantic council, an honor to to welcome his excellency, abdrabuh mansour hadi, the president of the repub

cut taxes 91 times. we grew this state by 742,000 jobs. we went down to unemployment below 2%. i'm a reformer. i get things done. i don't criticize the other side. i make sure things happen. and regards to what's going on, my opponent and barack obama, they want to increase food stamps and unemployment. i want to cut taxes, i want to get the individuals going, i want the private sector to create jobs and opportunities. there's plenty of money available for individuals to put into the marketplace. there are -- they're afraid because they don't know the direction of this election -- that this election is going to go. i am confident we can do better in america like i did as governor of wisconsin. >> our next question from robert kennedy directed first to governor thompson. >> i want to talk about a social issue. abortion, specifically. can you talk about what your position on abortion would be and how much federal dollars need to be spent on that? >> i am, i've always been, and will always be pro life. i do have exclusions for the life of a mother, rape and incest. but i am pro life
